Featuring a skilled team of rehabilitation experts, trauma, inpatient, and outpatient care, and a range of social support options, Texas Health offers a customized treatment plan to each spinal cord injury survivor it treats. Peer Mentoring Program
The peer mentoring program at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation (BIR) sets out to pair up former patients or community members living with spinal cord injury with current patients in inpatient rehabilitation. BIR seeks to pair mentors with patients who have suffered similar injuries, who are close in age or the same gender or who have other similarities.
BIR hosts a peer mentoring group session for mentors on the 1st Thursday of every month and we have an open discussion and question/answer session with current BIR patients.
At the end of a patient’s inpatient stay the patient is welcome to become a mentor himself. The patient may also choose to continue conversation with any of the mentors the patient has met during the patient’s stay.
All of our mentors must go through the Volunteer Services Department at Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) for TB testing, application process, orientation, parking sticker and I.D. badge. Applicants must also complete a Peer Mentor Orientation with the Spinal Cord Injury Team at BIR.
Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation
Dedicated to funding improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation awarded us with a Quality of Life Grant to fund our Peer Mentoring Program.
The program pairs you with someone who has emerged from the grueling work of rehab—with a similar level of injury—and knows what it’s like to live in the real world.
Outpatient Services
While Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation offers traditional therapies such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, we also offer driving instruction, aquatics therapy and home-based care that brings rehab to you.

Rehab Without Walls
Phone: 1-866-734-2296
A Whole New Kind of Care
Rehab Without Walls is dedicated to removing walls — including physical, emotional and geographical — that can slow recovery. The advantage of this comprehensive service is that a skilled clinical team, which can include physical therapists, occupational therapists, recreational therapists, speech pathologists, clinical social workers, nutritionists and neuropsychologists, is able to teach relevant skills in the patient’s environment as opposed to a staged setting. Instead of just learning to prepare a meal, patients learn to shop in their local grocery store and use their own kitchen. Rather than simply focusing on grooming skills, patients learn to navigate their own bathrooms, safely.
The ultimate goal of Rehab Without Walls is to provide care in a comfortable, familiar environment, help patients experience better outcomes. Our home & community based expertise reduces re-admissions, increases participation and provides tangible proven clinical and financial results.
We maintain the largest post-acute home & community database in the U.S. at over 8,000 patients, which we use as both a predictor and measure of positive clinical and financial outcomes. We have 6 peer reviewed and medical journal published research articles based on our findings. We have TRUE outcomes driven, verifiable data.
How Rehab Without Walls Works
Our expert team will create a customized treatment plan based on the physician’s orders and the patient’s goals. For example, if a patient wants to play the piano again, that will become part of the rehabilitation routine. When patients have a realistic goal — like returning to a beloved pastime or going back to work — rehabilitation becomes real.
